Would you if you could?

Soylent Green is a 1973 film set in the year 2022. The earth’s face has completely changed. New York’s population, for example, has grown to 40 million mouths to feed. The greenhouse effect has risen the temperature into nearly unbearable regions, and the people are kept in the cities by law. The government has made Soylent Green the most desirable and least available food. Now comes the part of the movie that captured my imagination 40 years ago.

Voluntary Euthanasia is a valid option in 2022. In the movie, Edward G. Robinson’s character was old, ill and simply tired of life. So he went to the euthanasia center and requested to die. They asked him what he wanted for his last meal, beverage(s), music, visuals, and fragrances. He sat back in a futuristic lounge chair and all his wishes were satisfied.

Since seeing that scenario I have thought how beautiful it would be to be allowed to exit life willingly without legal and medical interventions. For me, it is a dignified and respectful way to go through the exit door. I also have thought about the music I would want to hear, the food to eat, the beautiful scene to be looking at, etc.

What you be your choices? Currently I would want to hear Erik Satie’s Trio Gymnopedie, eat a small well done filet mignon with green peppercorn sauce with scalloped potatoes and grilled asparagus, a hearty red wine, and a dessert with lemon curd in it while looking at the view from Villa San Michele in the town of Anacapri on the Isle of Capri.
